Question

Are there age parameters for tendon transfers or FES implantations performed on clients with spinal cord injuries?

Answer

There are no specific age parameters for tendon transfers.  In fact, The Shriner's Hospital in Philadelphia performs these procedures quite frequently on adolescents.  However, a research procedure such as an FES implantation or neuroprosthesis are overseen by the FDA.  They limit the age on these type of procedures to 21 years of age and older.  Again, The Shriner's Hospital has received an exception to this rule for some research trials they are performing on younger clients.
