Question

How does fear of falling influence avoidance behaviors and impact daily life?

Answer

Fear of falling can lead to avoidance behaviors, where individuals limit or restrict their participation in activities due to concern about falling. This behavior results in reduced engagement in meaningful occupations and deconditioning. As people become less active, they may experience declines in physical strength, balance, cognitive functioning, and social interaction, further increasing their fall risk and perpetuating the cycle of fear and avoidance. This cyclical pattern, often termed the "vicious cycle," must be addressed by evaluating physical and psychological factors to develop appropriate interventions that help clients balance caution and engagement in daily activities.

This Ask the Expert is an edited excerpt from the course, Fear of Falling and Avoidance Behavior: Impact on Occupational Performance, presented by John V. Rider PhD, MS, OTR/L, BCPR, MSCS, ATP.
