Question

Can you provide a brief explanation of the Saeboflex?

Answer

The Saeboflex is a dynamic orthosis device that enables a person to learn how to release an object for those persons who do not have release.  A lot of times patients have mass grasp, but then they do not have release.  That minimizes their ability to use their hand function.  This is essentially a dynamic orthosis, and you can see this in some of the catalogs or some magazines.  It is custom to the patient.  You undergo a two-day training on how to fit and then practice with it, and become proficient in the use of it.  The patient is given home practice.  They start first with moving puff balls from crate to crate.  The key here is repetitive arm practice.  If they can get about 300 balls to about 450 balls, there would be substantial change in their upper extremity function.  In my experience, using the Saeboflex, I find that patients tend to regain more arm function than hand function.  I think in large part because arm function can be quite linear in nature whereas hand function you are dealing with multiple digits, multiple joints there, and therefore very complex degrees of freedom.
