Question

What are the two pieces of a task analysis with home modification?

Answer

An important clinical skill in home modification is task analysis. Task analysis looks at each step of the task to determine the abilities required to complete the task and then compares the abilities required with the client's abilities.  Finally, the necessary adjustments are made to the task or environment for successful completion.

There are two pieces of task analysis.  The first is analysing the occupation and the second is applying the occupation to the individual client.

Part 1: Analysis

  • Identify and describe the occupation
  • Identify the demands of the activity/task
  • Consider the contextual issues: temporal, physical, social and cultural

Part 2: Individuation

  • Compare the typical demand of the occupation to the abilities of your client.
  • Determine how to compensate (decrease the demands of the environment to match the skills of the individual).
