Question
What is occupational therapy’s role in pelvic health?
Answer
Occupational therapy (OT) is critical in addressing pelvic health, bringing a unique, function-focused perspective to client care. While clients may initially seek therapy for a single issue, OT practitioners often uncover multiple interconnected challenges, demonstrating the broader impact of pelvic health on daily function and quality of life. Practitioners can systematically evaluate and address pelvic health concerns using the OT Practice Framework, integrating them into any practice setting, regardless of specialization.
Research supports the effectiveness of OT interventions in pelvic health. A qualitative study in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy showed significant improvements in women’s symptoms and quality of life after OT interventions, as measured by tools like the Pelvic Floor Disability Index. Women reported feeling empowered and gaining a deeper understanding of their bodies. This highlights how occupational therapy contributes to symptom relief and long-term functional independence and confidence.
Integrating pelvic health into OT practice expands our ability to support clients holistically, aligning with our commitment to addressing all aspects of human function. By including pelvic health in treatment plans, OT practitioners enhance clients’ well-being and enable meaningful participation in life activities.
