A review of the history, design, and clinical benefits of robotics in upper extremity treatment will be provided in this course. The knowledge needed to select a system for use and implementation in clinical practice based on the patient population will also be addressed.

Pediatric power wheelchair assessment, including determining and developing cognitive and motor readiness, team evaluation, and mobility training as a part of the school day, will be comprehensively addressed in this course. Assessment, skill development, and skill training are critical to achieve functional and independent use of power mobility.

Transportation options for individuals with disabilities have expanded tremendously, giving families many more options to safely, easily, and quickly move between locations. This presentation will give an introduction to what adapted car seats and strollers are, how to evaluate them, tips for selecting the optimal products for your clients, and funding options.

Motor vehicle safety for drivers and passengers has increased exponentially over the past forty years. According to the literature, people seated in wheelchairs during travel are forty-five times more likely to be injured in an accident than a typical passenger. Currently, there are no federal regulations for wheelchairs used as seats in motor vehicles. This course will review principles for safe transportation.

Wheelchair seating systems often include secondary supports including pelvic belts, anterior trunk supports, and ankle straps. This course will explore secondary supports and appropriate clinical applications, as well as what to do when secondary supports are required, and team members have restraint concerns. Case studies will be included.

This course builds on the first part of the series and shares the perspectives of older adults regarding the use of smart technology and areas of concern within their homes. It will also discuss the categories of smart technology available at various price points to holistically support aging in place from a physical, cognitive, and social perspective.

Considerations around choosing the right smart technology for an older adult to age in place, including technology features, funding, and ethical considerations, will be discussed in this course. Assessment of client skills, technology adoption strategies, and other important factors related to ensuring appropriate choice and use of smart technologies will also be covered. The connection to social determinants of health will be discussed as well.

People who use wheelchairs may also use assistive technology such as speech-generating devices, computers, tablets, and smartphones. This session will present mounting options for each of these technologies to secure the device to the wheelchair for optimal visual regard, access, safety, and security.

The importance of prioritizing disabled individuals’ ideas, perspectives, and experiences in planning and achieving more accessible living is illustrated in this course. By doing so, occupational therapists will contribute to product solutions that meet real needs and preferences and be incorporated into daily living in a sustained, meaningful way.

The session begins with an overview of cortical visual impairment (CVI), including the characteristics and in-depth description of the phases of CVI. Strategies for creating an effective environment and considerations to keep in mind while conducting wheelchair evaluation and developing manual and power mobility skills for independence are discussed.
