A comprehensive understanding of the challenges posed by fatigue after cancer treatment and how occupational therapy can play a pivotal role in managing this condition is covered in this course. Fatigue is a common and debilitating issue experienced by many cancer survivors, impacting their daily lives and overall well-being. In this course, participants will gain essential knowledge and skills to address fatigue-related concerns through evidence-based occupational therapy approaches.

Adolescent brain changes during puberty will be highlighted in this course. We will consider how these changes may affect behaviors and participation in life tasks. What we used to blame on hormones is now attributed to a pruning effect that helps the brain become more specialized. As educators, this information is crucial when planning interventions.

How to incorporate sensory strategies for emotional management and self-regulation in pediatric practice is emphasized in this course. Emphasis will also be on preventing behaviors and meltdowns related to sensory processing, collaborating with teachers and parents to implement them into daily routines, and monitoring outcomes for documentation and program evaluation. You will have the opportunity to create a plan for a child on your caseload for generalization to practice.

Ethics is the foundation of professional practice yet therapists may experience moral distress and make less than ethical decisions when emotional issues, toxic work conditions, or low morale are unchecked. This presentation will overview the code of ethics and present clinical situations to challenge the participant to understand best practices in ethical decision-making.

Completing common bilateral tasks using one hand and a body-powered prosthesis will be reviewed in part 1 of this upper extremity series.

Substance use disorders are a significant problem in the elderly population. Studies have shown that elderly patients with substance use disorders have very good outcomes when diagnosed and treatment is initiated using SBIRT, a technique incorporating Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral for Intervention.

The many different types of elbow fractures will be discussed in this course. It will review current practice evaluation processes as well as conservative and/or surgical interventions ideas for these conditions for return to independence with all meaningful occupations.

Useful strategies (‘tools’) that pediatric therapists can implement in either the school or clinic setting for helping their young clients successfully navigate trauma through the use of yoga and other mindful movement activities for building resiliency and self-regulation of the nervous system will be reviewed in this course. Attendees will learn about the impact of trauma and how to lead therapy sessions from a trauma-informed lens.

Occupational therapy has a long significant history of contribution to persons leading independent and functional lives, which includes work. With injured soldiers returning to the US after WWI, reconstruction aides (later becoming occupational therapists) promoted work as a means and an ends to their rehabilitation. This remains the case over 105 years later. During this session, we will explore the history and the current state of work and industry, including ergonomics, as an area of practice for occupational therapy practitioners.
