An overview of infant massage will be provided in this course. The application of infant massage techniques with a special needs population will be discussed. Emphasis will be on using the current evidence to support infant massage techniques during occupational therapy intervention.

The anatomy and physiology of breastfeeding mothers and infants, the essentials of proper positioning, and what to do when there are challenges will be introduced in this course. In addition, this course will explain and highlight the occupational therapy practitioner's role and breastfeeding as an occupation.

To a newborn, neonatal units appear exceedingly loud, astonishingly bright, unbelievably chaotic and intermittently painful. Co-regulation and self-regulation in young children, ages birth to five with their parent/caregiver partner, will be the focus of this course. New findings of infant regulation states and barriers affecting the transition from co-regulation to self-regulation, as well as problem solving atypical progressions, will be discussed.

This course will describe the OT role in early assessment and treatment of the infant born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. We will discuss unique challenges of feeding, developmental, sensory and behavioral difficulties. Case studies will be used to review evidenced based and practical strategies that can be used to foster a strengths-based and family-centered approach to care.

Respiratory concerns for the premature infant is an intermediate course discussing the common lung conditions related to prematurity. Practical clinical applications include successful positive-pressure ventilation techniques, neuroprotection, long-term disease management, and improved interdisciplinary team communications.

Early intervention and identification of abnormal behaviors can be crucial within these progressive stages. This interdisciplinary course expands upon the theory of whole-body treatment, reflex identification, and therapeutic handling to effectively assist the infant’s early initiation of mobility and fine motor control. Through practical and clinical observations, the learner develops a deeper understanding of the importance of early intervention for the precrawling infant.

We will discuss the developmental characteristics of children with visual impairments and specifically how these children develop trust in the feeding relationship. Strategies for breast and bottle feeding and transitions to solids and utensils will be presented in support of parent success.
