Working in collaboration with families, studios, and community organizations, the Dance Ability Movement uses Occupational Therapy to build inclusive communities within dance studios, creating a welcoming space that directly impacts the health and well-being of those involved. The evolving Dance Ability model for inclusion and the impact that dance has on health and well-being, will be shared, along with the feedback, research, and stories that have come forth from dancers, families, volunteers, and others involved with their community.

Mallory Ryan

Degree, following a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree completed at the University of Ontario
Institute of Technology. Mallory is a community-based Occupational Therapist working with children
and families to promote optimal engagement in everyday activities, such as those related to school,
play, and self-care tasks. Mallory is also a certified dance instructor through the Canadian Dance Teacher's Association and RhythmWorks Integrative Dance.
Dance Ability Movement, a unique community dance program inclusive for children of all abilities,
featured on Global TV’s Walk the Walk series in 2013. This program, currently offered in several
host studios across southern Ontario involves training and educating dance instructors & volunteers,
and facilitating opportunities for dancers with varying abilities & needs to experience the many
benefits of dance. Mallory uses a family-centered approach, focusing on the strengths of the child
and family to enable meaningful participation at home, at school, in the studio, and in the community.
Mallory has experience working with children of all ages and abilities. Mallory uses a number of
different approaches based on her experience and training in Sensory Processing,
Neurodevelopmental Approaches, Handwriting Without Tears, and Moving and Handling courses.
She believes in the value of educating others to create awareness, acceptance, inclusion, and
empathy in communities and has provided workshops for educators, students, and other health
professionals on sensory processing and regulation. With a passion for creating meaningful
opportunities and discovering new potentials, Mallory strives to make a difference in her clients, their
families, and their communities.

Jade Ryan

Jade graduated from the University of Toronto with a Master’s of Science in Occupational Therapy Degree, following a Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology & Physical Education completed at Wilfrid Laurier University. Jade is a certified dance instructor as an Associate Member of the Canadian Dance Teacher's Association (CDTA) and a Rhythm Works Integrative Dance (RWID) Instructor. She is also a Level 1 certified gymnastics coach through NCCP. Jade is an energetic community-based Occupational Therapist and dance instructor who enjoys working with children and families to help them reach their goals. Jade believes in a family-centered approach, understanding and appreciating that families know their children the best, and can work together as a team to enable children to maximize their meaningful participation in all aspects of life. Jade incorporates a variety of approaches based on training and experience, including certification in the Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) approach, training in the DIR®/Floortime Model, Handwriting Without Tears programs, Rhythmic Movement Training, Principles of Safe Moving and Handling, and training in Motor Right Along and child development. Jade believes in adapting approaches for the individual needs of the child, that each child deserves equal opportunities, and every child can achieve success. These beliefs fostered the creation of The Dance Ability Movement, a community dance program for children and youth of all abilities that Jade, along with her sister and OT colleague Mallory Ryan, developed and currently run. Jade thrives off of the relationships created with the children and families she works with, and looks forward to being a part of many more children’s dance through life!
