I remember taking a client in a power chair 500+ feet down a sidewalk only to find a steel tie down in the way of completing our walk. There are so many things even therapists do not see in advance. I also have a former client who was stuck for weeks without his power chair due to parts not yet in or approval not yet received. It is nice to have things discussed, so we avoid patronizing talk in addition to this kind of stuff. I certainly hope I can pick up when I do this to patients.

Dr. Sorensen's sharing her personal story, handout, and pictures. I am glad I took this course. The course had me think of other areas to acknowledge and how to provide the best actions for anyone I come across who is in this situation. I feel like the information can be applied to other types of discrimination and disabilities in someone's life, too. It also reminds me that we all need to work together and harder for everyone to have accessibilities followed through in the world.

Katie’s journey has made her a beautiful person with a keen intellect, wonderful insights, a vast amount of knowledge and experience and above all an amazing sense of humor that more than compensates for any physical disabilities. I’m jealous of her friends, family, students and anyone else in her life who gets to enjoy her delightful personality and wealth of insight. I appreciated the honesty and passion of the speaker. I think despite our efforts, we cannot truly see or understand all of the obstacles those with disabilities face and it she’s so much light on a topic that I’ve not had the opportunity to sit and talk openly about with anyone so it was great to hear it from someone who has experienced the good/bad/ugly first hand. It’s opened my eyes even more.

Such a kind way to bring attention to the stigmas in society and in health practices towards disability. It really made me think about how I talk to my patients, how I might have stigmas in my own mind, and how to pay attention to the mental health needs of my patients as more long term care over the journey of physical healing.
