Part 1 begins with a review of the anatomy and etiology of peripheral facial nerve disorders, followed by how to evaluate a patient with facial palsy. A detailed review of the measurement scales commonly used is presented in detail, including a case example. This course is directly related to the practice of occupational therapy and is therefore appropriate for the OT and OTA. Please note the course does not go into detail of rehab for facial paralysis related to stroke.

Mara earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical therapy at the University of Delaware and a Master’s in Neurological Physical Therapy from the MGH Institute of Health Professions. Before settling in Boston, she worked as a PT at Johns Hopkins Hospital and then was a PNF instructor at Kaiser Permanente, in Vallejo California. Specializing in neurological and pediatric disorders, Mara then worked at Mass General Hospital, in Boston and earned the Stephanie Macaluso Excellence in Clinical Practice Award in 2003. She began working at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary’s Facial Nerve Center in 2004 and has been instrumental in growing the Center’s Facial Rehabilitation program with Dr. Tessa Hadlock. In addition to evaluating and treating all types of patients with facial palsy and synkinesis, Mara lectures on Facial Rehab at the university level, and at the International Facial Nerve Symposium Mara is a member of the Sir Charles Bell Society and Facial Palsy UK, international groups of medical professionals dedicated to sharing ideas about the treatment of facial palsy.
