As an OT with 30 years experience in several different clinical environments, this helped me to look at pain differently. Most, if not all, clients in Outpatient clinic wanted their pain gone. This helped me to understand how to involve them more and awareness that they can reach goals without pain being 0.

Presenter was very knowledgeable and presented things in an easy to understand manner. He used theories that I was educated on 20+ years ago along with more recent ideas. Great everyday ideas: Ex: 2-4 exercises; I currently work with a PTA that gives every patient a 3 pg handout for HEP. I have a lot of patients complain that it is too much, and as a result, they don't do PT or OT exercises! I loved the metaphors, too. The more functional way to look at pain has been what I love as an OT.

I really appreciate the use of the pain scale that measures how pain is impacting function rather than numerically rating pain based on the perceived intensity which is hard for patients to do and not very useful and can’t show as much change related to our interventions. There are SO many questions about pain that I am supposed to ask EVERY visit which seem counterproductive, but this approach is more person centered and useful.

The first hour or so was mostly theor, which feels less useful from a clinical perspective. It encouraged me to see the emphasis of a team, and the more wholistic view of our patients is becoming more recognized and valued. Seeing how to listen to our clients, their goals, what impacts their lives, and their experience of pain is being viewed from a biopsychosocial perspective was encouraging.

The course noted that pain is subject to the person and should be acknowledged. Language examples tie in with my personal practice as an Occupational Therapist to investigate further past the number scale and assess function and preceived pain as well as avoidance behaviors. As clinicians the ability to modify our own expectaions is critical in assisting our clients regain the ability to participate with meaniful activities while managing pain.

The personal approach to pain in his work, presented with clinical stories would have worked better for me. The evolution of the therapist's approach to pain with clients, chronologically presented with reference to the different theories interjected, may have helped to more explicitly show the very subtle and important points he was making, which are most valuable.

I appreciated this presenter's sensical approach to pain. As an OT practitioner, his analysis of pain aligned with my more holistic approach I tend to take with my own patient in SNFs. This boosts my confidence that I am approaching many patients in the correct context. I also valued and learned from his educational approach and theories based on individual pain tolerance and ideologies.

Simple. clear, well presented. Goals of course clearly defined and met. I really needed the reminder that I'm not there to "fix" my patients' pain, but to help them learn how to manage it better, so that they can function. A good framework was presented as to how to do this.
