Excellent overview of the evidence about brain differences and dopamine deficiencies of individuals genetically predisposed to addiction. Great information to decrease misinformation and preconceptions about addiction. I also appreciated the emphasis on spiritual engagement as a pillar of recovery (many paths to chose from) which is very compatible with the COPM centering of spirituality.

I know there are a lot of theories about what causes addiction. I am glad emphasis was made on the concept that it is a biological pre-determination.

I good to see that more research is shedding light on the complexities of addiction. It's not a choice, like some people feel. I know this from personal experience with a close family member. However I am happy to say this person has been 4 years sober and going strong. This course had more information than I anticipated with regard to brain health in addicts vs non addicts.

As a recovering alcoholic and practicing COTA, I found this information to be extremely valuable - both personally and professionally. I would love to see more on this topic and how we as practitioners can apply this knowledge in our treatment of patients. I work in a SNF and have come across many patients who are alcoholics/addicts but I have been reluctant to approach the topic. In addition, there is a gray area when it comes to addressing alcoholism/addiction as a contributing factor to a fall or illness when there is not a specific goal that relates. I would love to see the 'addiction as disease' model normalized/mainstreamed and see more medical professionals and caregivers address the issue with compassion and understanding.

I did not believe this question which dismissed environment and used the twin model discounting that the psychological effects effects of being orphaned or separated at birth would factor in. Addiction is an an acquired disease with the drug being used as coping device for pain physical, mental, spiritual, etc.. Factors vary from person to person and it sounds like the author doesn't have any personal experience. 4. All of the following statements are true EXCEPT: A. Children of alcoholics are 3 to 4 times more likely to be alcoholic than the general population B. The environment a child is raised in determines their propensity for addiction C. Biological children of alcoholics have a much higher risk of alcoholism regardless of who parents them D. Twins separated at birth had the same results by age 30 as children raised in birth families

I think the data surrounding addiction was significant; addiction is not a choice and yet many people continue to believe it is. People lose their jobs, families, rights...do people with diabetes lose those things? Do people with cancer lose those things? I think it could not be stated enough that addiction IS a disease, not a choice. People are also imprisoned for the consequences of their disease if they harm someone under the influence.Parkinson's disease is a disease and yet they are treated with dignity and respect. The same isn't true of people with addiction.
