This course had some great insights into neurodiversity-affirming care. However, I do feel as though some of the content delivered through this course was largely opinion-based and not as much research or data driven. That being said, I do understand this was more of a podcast/conversational style course, and I do feel as though this course had some valuable perspectives and good takeaways for clinicians to use in practice and interaction with neurodiverse clients.

we should operate from a sensory strength perspective and not try to fix persons with autism and just be a side coach along with their journey to what is the most meaningful role / occupation for them. I do not agree with one of the questions on the exam that talks about neurodiversity therapy for everyone. I do think we need to be careful of enabling people (or everyone as the question phrased) using a “victim mindset”. This can this attribute to some people getting stuck and not growing.

I loved how the interview featured an Autistic practioner so the audience could get a better perspective of what Neurodiversity means to a person with Autisim. I think it is time for the terminology and vocaulary surrounding people with differences need to change and this talk is a stepping stone in the right direction to facilitate this. I find the term neurodiversity so liberating in that it takes people out of the boxes they had been ascribed to.

This course has opened my eyes to subtle and not so subtle concepts..body autonomy, hand under hand, advocating with (not for) and respecting people as people with different outlooks- not everyone wants to be social and not everyone wants their preferred interest to be used as a form of manipulation.... I have so much to think about in my practice!

I felt it was okay. I feel like the host/co-presenter should have been more in tune with the topic prior to recording. He did not seem to demonstrate understanding of language that the student was stressed. Though anecdotal perspectives and stories do have value, I would have liked more peer reviewed research based citations.

This is a MUST listen for anyone who is in the OT world. The Autism "umbrella" only gets wider as time passes, so no matter what specialty you decide to work in, you will encounter someone who is on the spectrum. This should be a required listen for ALL OTR/L and COTA/L programs.

I appreciated hearing information from the perspective of someone that is dx as neurodiverse yet information was presented and used as testing items that suggest standardization versus individualism. I found the information generic and common sense from my perspective for those that are 'neurotypical' or 'neurodiverse' on autism spectrum. As with any person/client, individual strengths, differences, and presentations must be considered.

It is very important to re-assess old and develop new theories and practices constantly, particularly if they come from autistic individuals. At the same time, we need more research and evidence-based practice to see if new theories provide promising improvements on a larger scale. I am looking forward to following the progress on the next AOTA. The only portion of this course I have mixed feelings about is when Dr. Temple Grandin is mentioned negatively (in a way).
