The challenges neurodivergent children face in hospital settings are well documented by medical researchers, healthcare professionals, and autistic and/or ADHD individuals, themselves. Despite this, hospital personnel often fail to consider the unique sensory and communication needs of many neurodivergent children. Occupational therapy practitioners can improve outcomes by utilizing neurodiversity-affirming principles and advocating for more sensory-friendly hospital environments. This is Day 4 of the Pediatric Acute Care Virtual Conference.

The role of occupational therapy practitioners as members of an interdisciplinary team in adult acute care settings is well established; however, specific evidence-based discharge planning recommendations for pediatric clients are less known.
