A Sensory Approach to Potty Training

Presented by: Britt Collins MS, OTR

>> Britt Collins:   Welcome everyone to our Sensory Approach to Potty Training webinar today.  Our purpose and objectives of the presentation are going to be to understand the components of SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder).  I am actually going to break down the six subtypes of SPD according to Dr. Lucy Jane Miller’s approach, and we are going to talk about understanding how to use a sensory lifestyle for any challenging activity or ADL for children.  We are specifically going to talk about some learning tools to help a child with potty training.  This presentation is presented in a way for therapists to give parents tools or be able to share the information with families.  When I am talking in a certain way, you guys will understand that I am talking in an "easy to understand" format.

We have eight sensory systems.  I have them listed here because this is something that you can easily share with families that you are going to be working with, whether you work in a school setting, in a clinic or hospital setting. By having the families understand the basis of what a "Sensory Processing Disorder" is, the eight sensory systems, and how they function is going to be important for approaching and tackling any sort of issue that comes up.
